10 Unconventional Ways to Market to Your Customers

Sometimes when you do something over and over again, the results can become stagnant. That’s why it’s a great idea to mix it up when it comes to your marketing strategy! If you’re looking for unconventional ways to market to new and existing customers, consider leaning on traditional marketing tactics you may have put on the backburner in favor of more modern approaches. Check out these 10 unconventional marketing tactics to help add creativity to your efforts.

  1. Wrap a Car
Imagine riding around town with a car, truck or van that stands out! Especially on a company car, a vehicle wrap can be an interesting way to gain attention around town.

  2. Welcome Baskets
Give your newest customers a reason to stick around (besides your stellar business). Come up with a welcome basket that includes branded items, a heartfelt note and any other goodies you want to include.

  3. In Their Mailbox
When it first came on the scene, email was a fun new way to reach customers. Even today, it’s a cost-effective solution that can’t be ignored. However, if you’re trying to think outside the box, direct mail may be the way to go! These days, inboxes are full, and old-fashioned mail can be a fun and surprising way to reach customers.

  4. Make Stickers
Stickers are an easy way for your supporters to decorate their laptops, water bottles or anything! Plus, they’re cost-effective! Add them to your orders for free and give them away to your top supporters.

  5. Word of Mouth
It’s unconventional because many marketers don’t think of this as a “marketing” tactic because it’s free. Encourage reviews from the customers who already know and love you. Ask them to let their family and friends know about your business next time they have a need.

  6. Offer Referral Incentives
We often give our new customers a percentage off but neglect a good deal for our top customers. Give them a referral incentive, like a percentage off their next purchase or a flat rate they can take off their bill for bringing you new customers.

  7. Community Events
Handing out business cards is still a great way to ensure you leave a lasting impression. Make sure to carry them on you so that when an opportunity strikes, you’re ready. Consider a fun shape or updated design that goes outside of the normal rectangle box.

  8. Walk in a Parade
Summer months are here, and parades are happening in full swing for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, local holidays and Labor Day! Sponsor a float in your community parade and throw out candy or hand out something with your company’s branding.

  9. Billboards
Why not go the old-fashioned route? A billboard works especially well if your business aims to reach a specific location. See your name up in lights in a big way. Make sure to include location information and be succinct with your message.

  10. An Email from the CEO
You’re used to sending email marketing, but what about a personalized email from the CEO of your company? Sure, this isn’t a feasible tactic to reach everybody, but it is a great tactic to reach somebody who may be on the fence about purchasing from your business. Get your CEO to send the message from their inbox!

Use this list as a launching pad. The opportunities are endless! Consider hosting a brainstorming session with your staff to determine other unconventional ways to reach your customers. Remember to track the success of your campaigns to determine if you’ll try these methods in the future!
